Read about the changes taking place due to covid

At the start of the pandemic, there were many changes that we had to work on getting through. In the initial months, there were lockdowns, curfews, and restrictions, and people had to work virtually, which is not something we could adjust to. When it comes to being an electrician, most of the work that we handle is in person. There are a few aspects that can be handled remotely, but the rest was done in person, and that was challenging too.

However, with time, people were more accepting of the changes taking place, and they were open to meeting in person and getting their work done, as long as everyone followed the mask mandates and social distancing rules. There was a lot of work that we were handling because people wanted to make electrical changes around their homes, seeing as they were spending so much more time at home. We were working on redoing plug points and making other changes to account for their computer systems and various other devices and requirements.

When it comes to predicting the changes that will take place over the next six months, we cannot be sure, but there are a lot. We foresee the prices of materials starting to rise. Additionally, we would see a massive increase in the overall costs as compared to not too long ago. Unfortunately, our overheads after spending some time out of work have also had a major impact on our profits.

When it comes to the business, there were changes that we had to get through if we wanted to keep running throughout the pandemic. There was a serious decrease in sales due to lockdowns, but there was an increase in expenses with us now spending on sanitizers and cleaning the office regularly. Employees and customers were now living in fear of the virus, which caused many changes to day-to-day operations and the cost of every project. We had an overall overhead increase due to spending time screening employees and making sure job sites were safe for our employees and customers.

We even had to change the way we were communicating with one another. We now had some meetings by telephone or zoom. Additionally, more people are working from home, and therefore it is not always easy to meet up with them. People no longer socialize outside work, for example grabbing lunch or dinner with a customer because everyone was afraid of meeting in person or spreading the virus.

For the most part, we were working remotely, but there were times when we would work from the office space. However, we made sure that there were no real restrictions when it came to working from the office. We had to make sure everyone was following the rules, but other than that, we were adjusting as long as our customers and clients were comfortable with the process.

At our end, we made sure that we were keeping everyone safe. We implemented weekly sanitization of the entire office, vehicle sanitization, and the purchase of masks and hand sanitizer to make sure everyone coming in and going out was safe.

We did make some changes to the hours we were putting in. We were working a lot more now to make up for the time we were not getting much done because of the restrictions. We were working longer hours to maintain safety precautions. Additionally, we were visiting sites after hours when there were fewer people, sourcing materials as a lot of it was back-ordered or hard to find. We made it a point to make sure there were fewer people around when we were getting things done. Even when we were working in our clients’ homes, we would tell them to make sure that there were few others or they went to a different part of the house.

When it comes to in-person meetings, we did not have much of a choice because of the work we did. We are currently working with in-person meetings, parameters are social distancing, wearing masks, and no handshaking, fist pumps have become the new norm. However, when we have clients who are not open to meeting in person, we generally have to reschedule to a time where they would be open to working on this. However, if they want to get through a coordination task, we do it virtually using platforms like Zoom, Hangouts, or Google Meet.

The pandemic taught us a lot, and we even learned to appreciate some moments that we would not have otherwise. Before the pandemic, many of us did not have time for real, genuine moments with our loved ones. It was busy schedules, running around to make ends meet, and rushing to be in urgent meetings. As the pandemic set us all into lockdown, it gave us a moment to stop and reflect on the things most important in life, such as family and friends. It also gave us time to reflect on who we are, and for some, time to catch up on household projects left behind.

I look forward to the future and hope that one-day masks and sanitizing can be a thing of the past. Although the pandemic has taken so much from all of us, I am sure we can all agree that our views on what is important as opposed to what seems important, changed. I hope the future will bring us a safe and financially secure terrain.
